Showunmi Slams ADC Coalition As Ambition-Driven And Incapable Of Unseating Tinubu

Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Coordinator of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, has dismissed the newly formed coalition between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political figures, describing it as a gathering rooted in “inordinate ambition” with no real capacity to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Speaking in Abeokuta on Thursday during the Southwest Townhall meeting of The Alternative Movement, Showunmi cautioned Nigerians against giving attention to the coalition, insisting it lacks both vision and structure.

“The so-called coalition is made up of individuals who think every election must revolve around them. Their ambition is selfish. God won’t give what He doesn’t will, and man can’t force what God hasn’t allowed,” he said.

Showunmi also criticized the coalition’s leaders, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, arguing that they have brought destructive tendencies into the ADC instead of strengthening their original parties.

“If they had quietly joined ADC like decent people, maybe one could respect them. But they came in with the same habits that destroyed their previous parties. Now they’re parading themselves like they own the place. Where’s the evidence of development from their time in office?” he asked.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement is structured, pointing out that after eight years of power in the North, it naturally returns to the South.

“We operate on a pendulum of fairness. You can’t have one Yoruba man do four years and then another tries to grab another eight. If they’re truly seeking a viable opposition candidate, I can suggest names—but certainly not from this group.”

While reaffirming his readiness to hold Tinubu accountable when necessary, Showunmi urged critics to allow the president to focus on governance. “This administration just marked two years. I won’t sugarcoat criticism, but I also won’t support needless distractions. Let him work. We can assess properly in the third year.”

He hinted at plans to embark on a nationwide tour over the next three months, promising a major announcement afterward regarding his political future. According to him, The Alternative Movement is committed to reorienting citizens, especially around active participation in the electoral process.

“We must end voter apathy, stop vote buying, and start loving this country enough to vote with conscience. The Alternative is about building a new national identity, one we can all be proud of,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, condemned the coalition, branding its leaders as “recycled failures.”

He accused them of trying to exploit the current economic situation for personal gain.

“This government inherited an economy on life support, collapsed infrastructure, and broken security systems. While Tinubu is working to stabilize things, the same people who ruined the country now parade themselves as saviors,” Arabambi stated.

He stressed that The Alternative Movement supports coalition politics, but only if built on genuine progressive ideals. “What we reject is the repackaging of failed leaders. Nigerians must say no to a coalition of failures,” he added.
