Senate Minority leader calls for direct allocation of funds to local govt

The Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro has advocated reverting to direct statutory allocations to local government councils.
In an interview with Radio Nigeria, Senator Moro said this would stop interference by state governors in the affairs of the local government system.
Senator Moro, representing Benue South described the recent disolution of 23 local government councils in Benue state by the state government as an erosion of Democracy.
Senator Abba Moro, said there was a need to further amend the 1999 constitution and relevant laws that guide operations of the local government’s system.
He explained that it would help to stop the setting up of caretaker committees at local government councils by state governments.
Senator Moro who described the action by the Benue state Government as an affront on the constitution maintained that people who have sworn to uphold and protect the constitution are the same people bypassing it.
He noted that the government of Benue had recently sacked the 23 elected council chairmen and their vice-chairman , 276 councilors and supervisory councilors and secretaries.
The Minority leader said that there is no power in the constitution that arrogates the States House of Assembly to recommend dissolution or suspension of local governments councils.
