PSC Chair Calls for Gender Balance in Policing, Backs New NPF Policy Framework

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd), has underscored the need for greater gender sensitivity in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), stressing that equity is the foundation of inclusive policing.
This was revealed during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Police Gender Policy team to the Commission’s headquarters, where DIG Argungu emphasized that diversity should be reflected in every aspect of policing — from recruitment and discipline to the distribution of responsibilities.
“The diversity and disparity of human nature must be recognised in all aspects of human endeavour,” he said, while commending the NPF for its ongoing institutional reforms. He assured the visiting team that the PSC would continue to align with the principles outlined in the revised gender policy.
The delegation was led by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Aishatu Abubakar Baju, who highlighted the core objectives of the updated policy. She explained that the framework is designed to help the Force better serve Nigeria’s diverse population — particularly women and vulnerable groups.
“The police are mandated to protect all interests — not just those of the most privileged,” AIG Baju stated. She further noted that the policy aims to dismantle gender-based discriminatory laws and practices and improve the NPF’s response to gender-based violence and sexual abuse.
AIG Baju also drew attention to the professional toll childbearing takes on female officers, stressing that reproductive roles should be regarded as a national service, not a setback.
Adding his voice, Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (Rtd), PSC Commissioner representing the Judiciary, said while no Nigerian law explicitly discriminates against women, societal attitudes remain a major obstacle. He urged Nigerians to stop “discriminating against themselves” by reinforcing bias.
In his remarks, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd), PSC Commissioner representing the Police, applauded AIG Baju’s leadership on the matter and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advancing gender equity across the Force.
