Protest Alert: Police Promise Safety and Security

The Nigeria Police Force has been placed on high alert ahead of planned nationwide protests, with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, warning officers to be vigilant and professional in maintaining law and order.
In a virtual conference with senior police officers on Wednesday, Egbetokun emphasized the need for continuous preparedness and strategic deployment to respond to any situation that may arise during the protests.

The IGP also warned against the spread of fake news, which he said could exacerbate the situation, and advised the public to be cautious of unverified information on social media.
While acknowledging the right to peaceful protests, Egbetokun cautioned against allowing any group to hijack the events and incite violence, and warned against unplanned protests and street processions that could disrupt public order and safety.
The police force has been criticized in the past for its handling of protests, and Egbetokun’s warnings suggest a desire to avoid a repeat of previous clashes between police and protesters.
The nationwide protests are expected to take place in the coming days, with demonstrators calling for improved governance and economic reforms.
The police have promised to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians, and to protect the right to peaceful protest while maintaining law and order.
