Politicians and Negative News: A Clout Chasing Tactic?

It seems some Nigerian politicians have mastered the art of capitalizing on negative news. Whenever something unfortunate happens in the country, they are quick to post about it on social media. This creates the illusion that they are concerned citizens who are deeply affected by the country’s problems.
However, a closer look reveals a different motive. These politicians are not genuinely concerned about the well-being of the nation. Instead, they are using negative news as a tool to gain attention and sheer popularity.
These politicians know that people are drawn to negativity, and they exploit this tendency to boost their online presence.

This tactic is particularly evident when it comes to news about infrastructure failures, such as the recent incident involving the alleged collapse of the National Grid. Peter Obi on particular was quick to share the news, even though it turned out to be false.
The opportunity was used to criticize the government and portray themselves as the saviors of the nation.
This behavior is not only unethical but also counterproductive. By constantly amplifying negative news, these politicians are contributing despair.
These politicians are discouraging people from believing in the possibility of a better future for Nigeria. It is important for citizens to be aware of this tactic and to critically evaluate the motives of politicians who consistently share negative news.
We should not allow ourselves to be manipulated by those who seek to profit from our misfortune. Hence, it is important we know how to fact-check claims ourselves without relying on these politicians
