Police Deny Torture Allegations, Clarify Sowore’s Arrest Over Criminal Charges

The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims of torture in the arrest and detention of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, stating that his apprehension was based on “credible, corroborated allegations” of criminal offences, including forgery and cyberstalking.
In a statement referenced Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/483 and signed by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described as “false and grossly misleading” reports suggesting Sowore was brutalised in custody.
The police maintained that Sowore was arrested in full compliance with legal provisions and constitutional safeguards, and released on bail within the 48-hour period stipulated under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution. He is expected to appear before a court in the coming days to answer to the charges.
Addressing a viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, the police said the bandage was part of his personal belongings before his detention and was not a result of any injury sustained in custody. The Inspector-General of Police has reportedly ordered an internal investigation into how Sowore had access to the bandage while in detention, especially after he refused two separate offers for medical examination by independent police medical teams on August 7 and 8.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy for torture, in alignment with the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act, 2017,” Adejobi said, stressing that the Force’s handling of the matter is backed by a valid court remand order and free from political bias.
The statement further urged media organisations, civil society groups, and the public to exercise “greater diligence and professional responsibility” in reporting the case to avoid undermining public trust in the police and the integrity of ongoing investigations.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour,” the statement concluded.
