Police Charge Sowore With Inciting Mutiny, Return His Stolen AI-Powered Glasses

The Nigeria Police Force has filed a three-count charge against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of inciting police mutiny during a protest he led in July.
According to SaharaReporters, the fresh charges will see Sowore arraigned on Thursday, August 14, 2025. The activist confirmed on Tuesday that he had been formally served, with the allegations centred on claims that he instigated unrest within the force. He is scheduled to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Police Return Stolen AI-Powered Glasses
In a separate development, the police have returned Sowore’s AI-powered Ray-Ban glasses, which were stolen during the July 21, 2025 protest. That demonstration, led by Sowore alongside retired police officers, was aimed at pushing for better pensions and the removal of the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
During the rally, a police cameraman from the Force Public Relations Office, identified as Aku Victor Chiemerie, was caught on video taking the smart eyewear. Despite multiple petitions, no immediate action followed. However, after Sowore honoured a police invitation to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, he confirmed the return of the item.
“Today, the Nigeria Police Force returned my stolen Ray-Ban Meta eyeglasses, stolen by the National Thief, Aku Victor Chiemerie, to me,” he posted on X, adding that the police admitted to finding the glasses before handing them back.
Tuesday’s visit marked the second time in a week that the former presidential candidate and #RevolutionNow convener had honoured an invitation from the police.
