Plateau Varsity appeals for more security, housing, transportation

The Plateau State University Bokkos has sought the assistance of the State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the areas of security, staff housing, power and water supply, as well as transportation.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of the Plateau university, Professor Shedrach Best, who led management team of the university on a visit to the ministry, said the vicinity of the university has security challenges that affect the university, especially when there are attacks in surrounding communities.
While noting that over 95 percent of the students live off campus and are targets of criminal elements, Professor Best appealed for accommodation for students and staff within the campus in order to secure them as well as transportation to ease their movement.
Professor Best also called for the donation of sporting facilities, solar lights and awarding scholarships to indigent students unable to pay their school fees.
He applauded the 17 local government areas, who are co-owners of the university, for their contributions and the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for its remittances to the university, while also calling for training of staff of the university.
In their various responses, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Ephraim Usman, and Chairman of the Shendam Local Government Area, Mr. Kemi Nshe, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, assured that the institution will witness support in the nearest future, noting the importance of education to the development of every country, which should not be toyed with.
