Peter Obi Visits Niger State, Donates ₦20 Million To Flood Victims

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has visited Niger State to sympathize with the government and people following the devastating floods that recently hit Mokwa and surrounding communities.
Obi, who was accompanied by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, was received by the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Describing the scale of destruction as “heartbreaking,” Obi highlighted the loss of over 200 lives, nearly 1,000 persons still missing, and more than 3,000 displaced residents. Numerous homes and properties were also destroyed.
He revealed that while in the UK, he had placed a condolence call to Governor Bago to express his sympathies. Sharing his thoughts on X, Obi wrote:
“This incident and others happening across the country affect us all. As a nation, we must come together to care, comfort, and support one another, especially in times of collective grief and hardship.”
Obi commended the state government and emergency response teams for their swift action and called on the Federal Government, relevant agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to urgently assist with relief efforts.
As part of his support, he announced an initial donation of ₦20 million to aid victims and bolster the state’s ongoing response. He also pledged continued assistance for the recovery and rebuilding process.
“May God comfort the families of the deceased, protect those still missing, and grant healing and strength to all affected. I pray Niger State finds peace and full restoration,” he added.
The Mokwa flood, considered one of the deadliest in Niger State in recent years, has sparked national concern and renewed calls for a more coordinated and proactive disaster management strategy.
