Peter Obi Seeks Renewed Trust in Rail Transport After Derailment

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the nation’s transport system after Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train.
Obi, in a reaction on his X handle, said he was “deeply saddened” by the incident and extended sympathy to the injured passengers and their families.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation disclosed that the affected train was carrying 583 passengers and 15 members of staff when it went off the tracks. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau further confirmed that six people sustained injuries, though no deaths were recorded.
Describing rail transport as a key driver of national development, Obi insisted that Nigeria must continue to make strategic investments in the sector.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment today; my heartfelt prayers are with the injured and all affected,” Obi wrote.
“The rail transport system is a critical component of development, and we must continue to embrace it.”
He further urged government agencies to act swiftly in addressing the aftermath of the derailment.
“I urge the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate medical support to the injured, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in our transport infrastructures. We keep all affected in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
