Trump Imposes 10% Tariff on BRICS-Aligned Nations, Including Nigeria, Says No Exceptions

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that all countries aligning with what he described as the “anti-American policies of BRICS” will face an additional 10 percent tariff on their exports to the United States.
“There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump declared in a post on Truth Social.
The announcement comes as the U.S. prepares to formally notify affected nations, with official letters and tariff agreements set to roll out on Monday.
Trump, who has consistently criticized the BRICS alliance — made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — accused the group of working to undermine American influence on the global stage. The bloc has expanded in recent years to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE in 2024, with Indonesia joining in 2025 as its first Southeast Asian member.
Nigeria, which became a BRICS partner country in 2024, is pushing for full membership. It joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan in the partner-category status. The U.S. had already imposed a 14 percent import tax on Nigerian goods earlier this year.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has introduced a wave of import tariffs targeting several countries, positioning them as part of his broader economic strategy to protect American interests.
Reacting to the growing economic divide, Brazil noted that BRICS foreign ministers expressed “serious concern at the prospect of a fragmented global economy and the weakening of multilateralism” during a meeting in Rio de Janeiro. However, the statement was not a joint release, reflecting growing differences within the bloc.
Though the U.S. was not named directly, Trump’s unilateral tariff measures have raised global concerns about the risk of a broader economic slowdown.
As the new tariffs take effect, Trump signaled a tough stance: affected nations must either accept the terms or face the penalties. “Take it or leave it,” he said.
