Over 100 Terror Financiers Convicted in Nigeria, Says President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has announced that over 100 individuals financing terrorism in Nigeria have been convicted in the last two years.
This was disclosed on Tuesday at the 2025 National Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Financing of Terrorism, and Proliferation Summit in Abuja.
Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the government has been working to cut off financial support to terrorist groups. Meanwhile, the names of the financiers were not made public.
“The roles of the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Attorney-General in ensuring the prosecution of those financing groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP cannot be underestimated. These efforts have significantly weakened the groups’ ability to operate,” he said.
The president assured Nigerians that the government is committed to restoring security in rural areas by depriving terrorists of funding and resources. He urged citizens to support the security agencies in their efforts to combat terrorism.
The roles of the private sector, including banks and financial institutions, in tackling money laundering and terrorist financing were also acknowledged. He stressed that cooperation from all stakeholders is crucial in safeguarding the nation.
The president expressed concern over Nigeria’s inclusion on the global financial gray list in 2023, which affected the country’s economic reputation. He assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to implementing necessary reforms to address deficiencies.
Hafsat Bakari, CEO of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, stated that fighting financial crimes requires collective effort from government agencies, financial institutions, and international partners. She called for stronger collaboration to achieve long-term success.
