Opposition Can Remove Tinubu as Nigerians Battle Hunger – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has asserted that the opposition has the capacity to remove President Bola Tinubu from power, citing widespread hunger and frustration among Nigerians.
Speaking at an event in Abuja to mark his 60th birthday, the former Rivers State Governor reflected on his history of activism, recalling how he once mobilized protests against former military leaders, including Ibrahim Babangida and Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are all hungry. Every one of us. If you’re not hungry, I am,” Amaechi said. “That hunger and frustration are enough for the opposition to unite and remove the current leadership.”
Recounting his days as a student activist, Amaechi highlighted how students across Nigeria once stood united, regardless of region, to confront authoritarian regimes.
“We organized Tai Solarin’s protest against Babangida. We also protested against Buhari. Back then, there was no North or South division among us,” he said.
He recalled how the protests, which shut down institutions like Ahmadu Bello University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and University of Lagos, were coordinated from a central meeting in Kano.
“After the meeting, everyone returned to their campuses to mobilize. The moment the NANS president held a press conference, we hit the streets,” he said.
Amaechi lamented the current state of disunity among the youth, blaming a deeply entrenched political divide.
“You would see Northerners and Southerners sharing food and purpose back then. But today, young Nigerians have been mentally poisoned. They no longer have the freedom to liberate themselves the way we once did.”
