Opeyemi Aiyeola Explains Why She Blocked Colleagues And Quit Acting: “I Feared Divorce”

Nollywood actress Opeyemi Aiyeola has revealed why she blocked her industry colleagues and stepped away from the spotlight for over a decade.
Speaking in a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Aiyeola shared how her love story with husband Olayiwola Abdulwakilu led her to put her acting career on hold at the height of her success. She relocated to London and fully embraced family life, which she described as a personal choice rooted in her commitment to building a strong marriage.
“When his name came up, he approached me. I didn’t know what charm he used,” she joked. “He whisked me abroad and I fell deeply in love. That’s how I found myself in London. It’s like he added honey—Epe men know what they’re doing.”
The actress explained that she feared the instability often associated with celebrity marriages and wanted to avoid the public drama.
“People say actors don’t have homes or stable relationships, but they don’t know what we face. I didn’t want to end up divorced, so I blocked everyone in the industry and focused on my family,” she said.
Looking back, she said the decision was instinctive, not strategic. “I didn’t even realize how I ended up blocking everybody. One day I started unblocking them myself,” she added.
Now a mother of two boys, Aiyeola says she has poured herself into motherhood and is ready to reclaim her career.
“I’ve given my boys every bit of me—every sacrifice, every style of love. They know I love them. It’s time to focus on myself and carve out my own space again,” she said.
Aiyeola, who married in 2007, previously opened up about marital challenges in 2022, admitting that her relationship had endured serious disagreements and difficult moments. Despite the trials, she said she and her husband remained united.
In 2023, she celebrated her son’s high school graduation with heartfelt gratitude, revealing she had taken a break from social media to be present with her family.
She has also offered relationship advice to her fans, cautioning against falling in love blindly. “Don’t go into any relationship with just your heart and soul. Use your brain,” she warned. “The spirit of jagbajantis is real.”
