Ogah Raises Concerns Over State Police, Social Media Abuse by Youths

Hon. Chinedu Ogah, member representing Ezza South/ Ikwo Federal Constituency and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Public Hearing in the ongoing constitutional review, has raised critical concerns about the proposed establishment of state police and the growing trend of social media misuse by youths.
Speaking in Abakaliki, Ogah offered a cautious stance on the controversial issue of state policing, warning that while the initiative may have merits, it also carries potential risks if abused by political leaders.
“I don’t have a firm position,” Ogah said. “While some governors may use it positively to enhance local security, others may deploy it to intimidate or suppress political opponents. Let the people decide.”
His remarks come amid nationwide debates over decentralizing Nigeria’s policing structure as part of the broader constitutional review. Advocates say state police would enhance response to local security threats, while critics worry it could be weaponized for political persecution.
In addition to his concerns about policing, Ogah condemned the rising trend of social media being used by some youths to spread falsehoods and smear the reputation of public officials. He also faulted journalists for amplifying such narratives without proper verification.
“Some of our youths lie and tarnish the image of public officials on social media, and journalists help amplify them,” he said. “The media should separate fact from fiction.”
Ogah called for greater media responsibility and digital literacy, urging journalists and citizens alike to uphold truth and integrity in public discourse.
The lawmaker’s comments were part of a broader engagement on ongoing constitutional amendments, which include proposals for new states, additional local government areas, reforms in electoral laws, judicial processes, and devolution of powers.
Despite his reservations on certain issues, Ogah expressed confidence in the constitutional review process and assured his constituents that key developmental projects—including road construction, classrooms, solar-powered streetlights, and empowerment schemes—had been captured in the 2025 budget.
“We’re just praying for timely release of funds so these projects can be fully implemented,” he said.
