Obi Slams Nigeria’s Justice System Over ‘Death-for-Fowl’ Sentence

The Nigerian judicial system has come under scrutiny following the sentencing of Segun Olowookere to death for stealing a fowl in Osun State.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for reform in the country’s legal system.
Olowookere, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, has already served 14 years in prison. His case was brought to the attention of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has since intervened and directed the Attorney-General to review the case for a possible prerogative of mercy.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has also weighed in on the matter, criticizing the Nigerian judicial system for its “harsh inequalities” in delivering justice.
“I commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for stepping in to prevent the inhumane punishment of death by hanging for the theft of a fowl and eggs,” Obi said in a statement. “This case highlights the harsh inequalities in Nigeria’s legal system, where those who embezzle billions of public funds are often celebrated, while ordinary citizens face disproportionate punishments.”
Olowookere’s parents have also spoken out about their son’s case, sharing their plight and the hardships they’ve endured over the years. They expressed their hope for justice and thanked Governor Adeleke for his intervention.
The case has sparked a national conversation about the need for reform in Nigeria’s judicial system. Many are calling for a review of the country’s laws and policies to ensure that justice is served fairly and equally for all citizens.
