Obi of Lagos: Police Arrest 65-Year-Old Man and Three Others

The Lagos State Police Command says it has taken into custody a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, who allegedly styled himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”
Azubike was picked up along with three others while preparing to hold what police described as an unlawful unveiling ceremony. His arrest has already stirred debate online, especially among young people trading banter over the planned installation.
Police identified the suspects as Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). All four are being detained at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
According to a statement released Wednesday on X.com, the group had scheduled the launch of a prototype of a supposed N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State.” The unveiling was to take place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin before officers intervened.
The statement explained that the venue was sealed to avert possible unrest and to shield unsuspecting members of the public from being misled.
Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed that tactical units, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to secure the area and ensure order. He noted that investigations are underway and that the suspects will face prosecution once the process is complete.
Jimoh cautioned Lagos residents against falling victim to impostors who exploit traditional and cultural institutions for personal gain. He stressed that such conduct is unlawful and poses a serious threat to public peace.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. On April 1, 2023, police arrested Frederick Nwajagu, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, for allegedly parading himself as a traditional ruler in the state.
