Oba Akiolu Tasks Corps Members on Discipline, National Unity and Patriotism

The Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu, has charged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to distance themselves from social vices and actively promote national unity and patriotism.
This call was made during a courtesy visit by the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, and her team to the monarch at his Iga Idunganran Palace in Lagos.
Oba Akiolu expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of Nigerian youths in materialism, drug abuse, and other detrimental behaviors. He emphasized the need for corps members to focus on meaningful, productive engagements that contribute to national growth and personal development.
He commended the efforts of government agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for their ongoing campaigns against drug abuse and related vices.
The monarch encouraged corps members to stay committed to the objectives of the NYSC scheme, emphasizing education, discipline, and moral uprightness as key tools for national development. He also assured the corps members of their safety and the hospitality of the Lagos Island community, while pledging to support initiatives that will provide decent and affordable accommodation for those posted to the area.
In her response, NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, expressed appreciation to Oba Akiolu and the Lagos Island traditional council for their unwavering support to the NYSC.

She appealed for continuous community cooperation in helping corps members settle and integrate effectively during their service year.
The visit ended with royal blessings and reaffirmed the monarch’s commitment to youth development, unity, and national progress.
