OAU Mourns As Dentistry Student Ajibola Ibitayo Allegedly Commits Suicide After Exam Results

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been plunged into mourning following the alleged suicide of Ajibola Ibitayo, a Dentistry student, reportedly linked to poor academic performance.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, Adebayo Idris, confirmed that the tragic incident occurred shortly after examination results were released on August 12.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read. “We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination result. This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face. As an association, we are devastated, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.”
Idris urged students to be vigilant about the well-being of their peers and to seek professional support when facing emotional or academic pressures.
The association also stressed that mental health is as vital as physical health, emphasizing that no student should feel isolated in their struggles.
