NYSC Officer Clarifies Allowance Payments, Warns Corps Members on BVN Errors

The Assistant Director and Accounts Officer of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Mathias Ejeh, has issued important clarifications regarding the payment of allowances to corps members at the Lagos Orientation Camp.
Speaking during a financial orientation session, Mr. Ejeh emphasized that corps members are entitled to several statutory allowances, including transport, bicycle, medical, and Non-Regular Allowance (NRA). However, he noted that some corps members have yet to comply with the directive to open designated accounts specifically for the disbursement of NRA, causing delays in processing payments.
He explained that all financial transactions are processed through the Federal Government’s Remita platform under the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system and disbursed via the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
Mr. Ejeh stressed that monthly biometric clearance and thumbprinting with the Local Government Inspector (LGI) remain compulsory for corps members to receive their monthly stipends.
In a strong warning, the Accounts Officer urged corps members to ensure that their Bank Verification Number (BVN) details match their NYSC registration names. He warned that any discrepancies could result in failed transactions, with unclaimed funds eventually returning to the government treasury.
Furthermore, corps members on medical or maternity leave were advised to notify their LGI officially in order to remain eligible for allowance payments during their absence.
Mr. Ejeh also addressed common misconceptions, reiterating that NYSC does not offer loans to corps members at any point during the service year, cautioning them to disregard any contrary information.
