NYSC Member Jennifer Elohor Breaks Silence On Assault By Anambra Vigilante Group

A National Youth Service Corps member, Jennifer Elohor, has recounted her ordeal after a viral video showed her being assaulted by members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group.
The incident occurred on July 13 around 5 p.m. at the lodge where Elohor and other corps members were staying. In an interview with media personality Aprokoking on Wednesday, she said she and her colleagues were indoors when they heard an aggressive knock on their door.
“At first, we thought it was our neighbours because it’s a three-storey building with several flats. But the knock became louder and more aggressive, so I decided to check. Before I could reach the door, it was kicked open,” she explained.
Elohor said a masked man armed with a gun stormed in without any identification or uniform. “At first, I thought it was an armed robber until he ordered all of us outside. I tried to explain we were corps members and even offered our NYSC identity cards, but they ignored us,” she said.
She described how the intruders ransacked their room, confiscated phones and laptops, and became physically violent. “They pushed us downstairs, almost shoving me down the staircase. They kept asking what gave me the right, as a woman, to challenge them. Outside, we saw their vehicle and realised they were from the Anambra Vigilante Group,” she added.
Elohor further claimed that when they asked to contact their lodge proprietor or NYSC officials, the vigilantes grew more brutal. “They beat me, tore my clothes, and even hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod for pleading on my behalf. They forced me into their vehicle, pressing my neck, slapping me, and threatening to destroy our phones if we contacted anyone,” she said.
PUNCH Online reported that the operatives, armed with guns, accused the corps members of being internet fraudsters despite the victims presenting their NYSC IDs and uniforms. The video shows Elohor being beaten despite her cries for help.
The assault has sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians condemning the vigilante group and demanding justice. In response, the Anambra State Government said those responsible have been identified, arrested, and detained, and confirmed that the operatives involved in the attack have been sacked.
