NYSC Lagos Takes Free Health Outreach to Iwaya Community

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lagos State, has extended its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) to the Iwaya-Yaba community, offering free medical services and food support to over 350 indigent residents.
The outreach, which marked the second quarter edition of the HIRD programme, took place at the Palace of the Oniwaya of Iwaya, His Royal Majesty Oba Suleiman Owolabi Ogun-Oloko.
It featured a team of 12 doctors, 8 nurses, 4 pharmacists, 2 optometrists, and 4 laboratory scientists who delivered healthcare services including health talks, vital sign checks, medical consultations, eye screening, and medication dispensation. Patients with more severe conditions were referred to healthcare facilities for further treatment.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, led the delegation and paid a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler. She expressed gratitude for the warm reception given to corps members in the community and thanked the monarch for granting permission to host the programme within his palace premises.
“This programme is part of NYSC’s commitment to supporting rural communities with access to healthcare. We are grateful for the peaceful and supportive environment the corps members enjoy here in Iwaya,” Salmwang said.
In his response, Oba Ogun-Oloko appreciated the NYSC for bringing the initiative to Iwaya for the first time and called for it to become a regular event. He also encouraged corps members to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities to ensure harmony throughout their service year.
Aside from medical services, food items and medications were distributed to the beneficiaries, reinforcing NYSC’s dedication to improving the welfare of underserved communities.
The event also featured aerobic sessions, traditional dance performances, and educational talks on the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.
