Nurses Suspend Strike After Meeting With Federal Government

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide strike following a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government.
Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, announced the development on Friday while addressing journalists, stating that the decision came after successful negotiations between both parties.
While details of the agreement remain undisclosed, union representatives declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting.
The association had embarked on a seven-day warning strike on July 29, 2025, in protest over the government’s failure to address demands outlined in a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14.
Initially set to end on August 5, the strike affected public health institutions across the country and was driven by longstanding concerns over poor welfare, inadequate working conditions, and what the union described as official neglect.
NANNM had specifically called for improved welfare packages, equitable allowances, and better working environments for nurses in federal health facilities.
Earlier, the association’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had criticised the government for not engaging the union during the ultimatum period.
As of press time, the exact terms of the agreement that led to the suspension of the strike had not been independently confirmed.
