Northwest Governors Declare Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The North West Governors Forum has announced that Tuesday, July 15, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday across all seven states in the region, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a hospital in London.
The decision was made public in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda. The governors described Buhari’s death as a painful loss to the nation and the region, calling him “our father, our leader, and the pride of the Northwest region.”
“The Northwest Governors Forum receives with shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of our beloved former President, General Muhammadu Buhari. He lived a life of service, integrity, and sacrifice for the betterment of Nigeria,” Radda said.
He noted that all the Northwest governors reached the decision unanimously, agreeing that a public holiday would serve as a fitting tribute to the late statesman’s legacy.
Buhari’s remains are scheduled to arrive in Katsina, his hometown, at about 12 noon on Tuesday. Burial rites are expected to follow at 2 p.m. in accordance with Islamic customs.
“We call on all Nigerians to join us in prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Radda added.
The statement also extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the late President’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians across the country mourning his death.
A retired Army General, Muhammadu Buhari led Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as a civilian President, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. Widely regarded for his anti-corruption drive and modest lifestyle, Buhari remained a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Preparations for his state burial in Daura are ongoing, with dignitaries expected to arrive from across Nigeria and abroad to pay their final respects.
