Nigerian Political Leaders Mourn Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Prominent Nigerian political figures and institutions have continued to pay tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, soldier, and statesman who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.” In a statement, Tinubu acknowledged the late president’s enduring impact on national unity and security, saying his contributions “will not be forgotten.”
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also joined in mourning, noting that Nigeria had lost “one of its foremost leaders.” Jonathan praised Buhari’s decades-long commitment to public service and urged Nigerians to honour his memory by upholding the values he stood for.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remembered Buhari as “a symbol of resilience,” highlighting his ability to overcome personal and political challenges throughout his career. Atiku extended condolences to Buhari’s family and all Nigerians mourning his death.
Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale paid tribute to Buhari as “a good man and great leader,” noting his integrity and courage in the face of adversity.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) described the late president as “a patriot and a symbol of integrity.” In a statement issued by the party’s leadership, the ADC said Buhari’s life exemplified discipline and sacrifice for the nation.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu also offered condolences, hailing Buhari’s “legacy of honour and sacrifice.” Kalu praised the former president’s record in public service and called on Nigerians to reflect on his contributions to nation-building.
Buhari, who first came to power as a military head of state in the 1980s before returning as an elected president decades later, leaves behind a complex legacy that has shaped Nigeria’s modern political history.
