Nigeria Records 30% Increase in Power Generation in 2024 – Minister of Power

Despite persistent power grid collapses in 2024, Nigeria achieved a 30% increase in Power Generation.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Asiwaju Media gathered that the national grid suffered 12 collapses in 2024. However, Adelabu explained during a budget defense session with the Senate Committee on Power that generation capacity rose from 4,100 MW in 2023 to 5,528 MW by December 2024.
Adelabu attributed the increase to several factors, including the addition of the 700 MW Zungeru hydroelectric power dam and improvements in existing thermal and hydro plants.
He also acknowledged that the initial target of 6,000 MW was unmet due to late-year grid disturbances. However, energy access in Nigeria also improved, increasing from 59% at the end of 2023 to 64% in 2024.
However, Adelabu expressed concern over the country’s metering gap. As at now six million customers are metered, while over seven million remain unmetered, creating room for billing fraud.
“To address this issue, the ministry has secured N700 billion for the procurement of meters. Plans are underway to distribute at least two million meters annually over five years, aiming to eliminate the metering gap entirely,” he said.
