Niger Assembly Seeks Ban On Marker’s Day And Sign-Out Celebrations Over Rising Misconduct

The Niger State House of Assembly has urged Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning “Marker’s Day” and “Sign-Out” celebrations in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
The resolution followed a motion by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris of Tafa Constituency, who raised concerns over the growing cases of unruly behaviour, misconduct, and immoral activities linked to such events.
Idris noted that the “signing out” tradition, originally a harmless way for graduating students to mark the completion of their studies, has increasingly been overshadowed by troubling incidents that threaten efforts to raise disciplined and responsible youths.
Lawmakers unanimously supported the motion, agreeing that public concerns over the celebrations warranted immediate intervention.
Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Dauda said the Assembly would work with the governor and the State Ministry of Education to ensure swift implementation of the proposed ban.
