New Year Message: NBA President Condemns Plateau and Tudun Biri Killings; Urges Tinubu on Security and Economy Reforms

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau, vehemently condemns recent bandit attacks in Plateau State, claiming nearly 200 lives, and the military drone strike in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, which resulted in over 100 casualties.
Expressing grave concern over the evident security lapses, Mr Maikyau emphasized the imperative for President Tinubu’s administration to prioritize national security.
In a statement released by the NBA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, the association reiterates its commitment to holding the government accountable and advocating for policies benefiting all Nigerians.
Mr Maikyau underscored the urgent need for substantial government investment in nationwide security measures, stressing the necessity of seamless inter-agency coordination.
He urged a strategic, region-specific approach to address security challenges, emphasizing the importance of investments without compromising Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“Government must ensure that no part of Nigeria remains under the control of criminal elements. Deliberate investments in security are crucial,” Maikyau states emphatically.
Economic Reform
Mr Maikyau acknowledged President Tinubu’s efforts but called for practical actions to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal.
He emphasizes the importance of fiscal measures aimed at boosting domestic production, budgetary reforms to stimulate the economy without fostering inflation, and enhancements in electricity generation and transmission.
NBA’s president highlighted the government’s responsibility to implement people-centric policies, promoting sustainable development and reducing inequality.
“With the passage of the 2024 Budget by the National Assembly, President Tinubu must translate promises into action, reassuring Nigerians that their sacrifices will yield tangible results,” Mr Maikyau asserted.
He stressed the need for government commitment to the social contract with Nigerians through the adoption of people-oriented policies and programs aligned with sustainable development principles.
The NBA President reaffirmed the association’s unwavering commitment as the watchdog for the Nigerian people, dedicated to holding the government accountable.
