Nemanja Matic Banned For Covering LGBTQ+ Logo In Ligue 1 Match

Nemanja Matic has been banned for covering the LGBTQ+ anti-homophobia logo on his shirt during a Ligue 1 match between Lyon and Angers on May 17, 2025.
The rainbow badge was part of the league’s campaign for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Following the incident, the French Football Federation imposed a two-match suspension on Matic, to be served at the start of the next season.
He was also required to take part in an awareness campaign addressing homophobia in football. Matic was not the only player to cover the badge; Le Havre’s Ahmed Hassan faced the same sanctions.
The players’ actions have sparked debate over the conflict between personal beliefs and participation in league-wide inclusivity campaigns.
French Sports Minister Marie Barsacq emphasized that homophobic behavior is unacceptable and affirmed the Federation’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and enforcing sanctions where necessary.
