Navy Dismisses Lieutenant Obini Over Affair with Colleague’ Wife

The Nigerian Navy has dismissed and jailed a senior officer after finding him guilty of misconduct involving a colleague’s wife.
Naval Lieutenant SN Obini was dismissed from service and handed a three-year prison sentence after being convicted of engaging in a consensual sexual relationship with another officer’s wife. The judgment, delivered by a Special Court Martial, was formally implemented on August 29, 2025, at the Nigerian Navy Institute of Technology (NNIT) Parade Ground in Sapele.
This disciplinary action highlights the Navy’s strict enforcement of its ethical code. The service has maintained a zero-tolerance policy against conduct it considers detrimental to discipline and professionalism.
The military court found Obini guilty on four counts, including the affair itself, scandalous conduct, and deceiving witnesses. His dismissal and sentence took effect retroactively from November 23, 2024.
A 2023 Nigerian Navy internal study revealed that about 12% of disciplinary actions in the service stemmed from what it classified as “scandalous conduct.” Such cases are considered rare and severe under the Armed Forces Act, which prescribes stiffer penalties than civilian law—where consensual extramarital affairs are not criminalized unless coercion is proven.
This ruling has drawn wide attention as one of the most prominent cases of its kind within the Nigerian military in recent years. The Navy’s response, endorsed by the court-martial board, is being seen as a warning to officers about the weight of violating military codes.
It also underscores a contrast between military and civilian standards of accountability. While in civilian life such private relationships may not attract legal sanctions, the military’s disciplinary approach is far stricter. This has triggered debates on whether disciplinary measures should be applied more equitably across genders and circumstances in such cases.
Observers suggest the Obini case could fuel reforms in how the armed forces handle ethical breaches, particularly those involving personal relationships.
