Natasha Tells IGP: Restore My Security As I Return To Senate

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has officially informed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of her scheduled return to the Senate on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, following a Federal High Court ruling that nullified her suspension.

In a letter titled “Police Acknowledgement – Notification of Resumption and Request for Restoration of Police Protection,” the senator representing Kogi Central referenced the court’s decision in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/543/2024, which ruled that her suspension was excessive and beyond the powers granted to the Senate under Section 63 of the Nigerian Constitution.

The court also ordered her immediate recall to continue representing her constituents at the National Assembly.

Despite this judgment, SaharaReporters learnt that the police have yet to restore Akpoti-Uduaghan’s official security detail, nor has there been any formal response from the Force.

Ahead of her resumption, the senator requested the immediate reinstatement of her security, citing rising threats tied to high-profile political roles. She noted that her safety was essential for the effective discharge of her constitutional responsibilities.

She wrote, “In light of the security challenges that often accompany high-profile political matters and the need for adequate protection in the course of my official duties, I respectfully request the immediate restoration of my official security detail. This is crucial to ensure my safety as I resume work and continue to carry out my constitutional responsibilities without hindrance.”

A Certified True Copy of the court ruling, including Order 12 which specifically directs her reinstatement, was attached to her letter.

Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed confidence in the IGP’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting public officials, urging swift action to guarantee her safety as she resumes her legislative duties.
