Museveni To Seek Re-Election In 2026, Confirms Uganda’s Ruling Party

Uganda’s ruling party has confirmed that President Yoweri Museveni will run for re-election in the country’s upcoming polls scheduled for early next year.
The 80-year-old leader, who has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades, had been widely expected to seek another term in office.
Ahead of the January general election, the opposition has come under increased pressure, with reports of intimidation, abductions, and arrests targeting prominent activists and politicians.
In a statement published on its website, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) said Museveni “seeks to retain the positions of the NRM chairman and party presidential flag bearer in the 2026 elections.”
Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM electoral commission, confirmed to AFP that Museveni would officially declare his interest in running as the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
