MultiChoice Slashes DStv Decoder Price By 50% Amid Subscriber Drop

MultiChoice Nigeria has slashed the price of its DStv decoder by 50 percent — from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000 — in a bid to attract new customers and address a sharp drop in subscriptions.
In a statement on Tuesday, the company’s CEO, John Ugbe, said the price cut is part of its new “We Got You” campaign, aimed at rewarding customer loyalty and making premium entertainment more accessible.
“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” Ugbe said. “The campaign is about showing that DStv has something for everyone — not just football fans.”
He noted that DStv is repositioning itself as a platform offering daily value across various genres including movies, drama, children’s shows, and news.
The company also launched a limited-time promotion granting customers a free upgrade to the next package tier when they fully pay for their current subscription between June 16 and July 31, 2025.
MultiChoice explained that both the decoder price slash and the free upgrade offer are direct responses to the harsh economic realities facing many Nigerians.
The move comes as the company grapples with a significant subscriber loss — 1.4 million customers — between March 2023 and March 2025.
This effort follows a series of controversial price hikes: one in April 2023, another in November 2023, and a third in April 2024, which took effect on May 1.
