Morocco Win Third CHAN Title After Edging Madagascar 3-2 In Thrilling Final

Morocco clinched a historic third TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) title with a 3-2 victory over debutants Madagascar in a thrilling final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions, who previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020, faced a resilient Malagasy side but ultimately relied on their experience and firepower to secure the win. Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui stole the spotlight, scoring twice—including a stunning 40-yard strike—to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
The triumph earned Morocco not only the championship but also a $3.5 million prize, while Madagascar, who captured hearts with their remarkable run, took home silver and $1.2 million.
The final delivered from start to finish. Lamlaoui opened the scoring within 15 minutes, following a precise pass from Youssef Mehri, but Toky Rakotondraibe quickly equalised midway through the first half. Morocco regained the lead when Sabir Bougrine converted another Mehri assist.
The second half produced the defining moment of the tournament: Lamlaoui’s audacious long-range strike that left goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa helpless and drew applause from the crowd. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa’s late goal for Madagascar set up a tense finish, but Morocco held on to claim their third CHAN title in six years.
For Madagascar, the defeat was a proud milestone. In just their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final, leaving with a sense of achievement and belief in future success.
The 2024 edition, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, concluded on a high note, with Morocco once again establishing themselves as a benchmark in African football.
