Minister pledges support for Peace Corps Bill, youth empowerment initiatives

The Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the swift passage and formal approval of the Peace Corps Bill, a move seen as a major boost for youth empowerment and national development.

Comrade Olawande made this pledge during a courtesy visit from the leadership of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), led by its National Commandant, Dr. Dickson Akoh, on Friday. The discussions focused on how the Peace Corps initiative could create opportunities for young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to society.

Peace Corps: A Tool for National Progress

Speaking during the meeting, the Minister highlighted the critical role of youth-driven initiatives in fostering unity, bridging cultural divides, and driving community development.

“The government is making significant strides toward creating a brighter and more unified future for all. This important legislation aims to enhance international cooperation and promote community development by enabling young volunteers to engage in meaningful service both locally and globally,” Olawande stated.

PCN’s Legacy of Youth Development

In his remarks, Dr. Dickson Akoh acknowledged the Ministry of Youth Development’s pivotal role in shaping the future of the country. He stressed that empowering young Nigerians leads to thriving communities, economic growth, and national progress.

“We are confident that under your leadership, the Ministry will continue to foster innovative programs that uplift young Nigerians, support their talents, and prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow,” Akoh affirmed.

He also highlighted that since its establishment over two decades ago, the Peace Corps of Nigeria has remained self-sustaining, funding its structures and activities across the country.

“This includes sponsoring members to attend various international conferences and meetings organized by the United Nations and the African Union in Ghana, Kenya, the United States, Brazil, and Switzerland,” he revealed.

Honoring the Minister’s Commitment

Dr. Akoh further commended the Minister’s visionary leadership, particularly his efforts in developing key youth empowerment initiatives such as a Youth Bank, a Youth Rights Desk, and other essential programs.

In recognition of his dedication to youth development, the Peace Corps Council—the organization’s highest decision-making body—bestowed upon Comrade Ayodele Olawande the prestigious title of National Patron, along with all associated symbols of office.

With renewed government backing and growing public support, the passage of the Peace Corps Bill is expected to strengthen youth engagement in national service and further solidify Nigeria’s commitment to youth-driven development initiatives.
