Many Killed, Homes Burnt as Ikwo Communities War Over Land

A deadly communal clash between the Ekpoamaka and Enyimegu communities in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has left many people dead and widespread destruction in its wake, as a long-standing land dispute explodes into full-blown violence.
The conflict, which erupted earlier this week, has claimed the lives of numerous residents with eyewitnesses describing scenes of bloodshed, arson, and mass displacement.
Armed youths from both communities have been engaged in fierce fighting, torching homes, farms, and properties.
Though the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, local sources say scores have been killed in what is now one of the deadliest episodes in the history of the protracted land dispute.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement, raising concerns among residents over the absence of timely security intervention.
A resident who spoke to NAIJA NEWS TODAY under the condition of anonymity confirmed that some stakeholders from Ikwo had visited the area a few days ago to mediate.
“Community leaders came and begged both sides to stop fighting. They called for peace and a ceasefire, but the war is still ongoing. People are dying, houses are burning — it’s a nightmare,” the source said.
Entire families have been displaced, with many fleeing to neighboring towns and bushes to escape the violence. Schools, markets, and places of worship have been shut down, and there are growing fears of a looming humanitarian crisis.
Calls are mounting for the Ebonyi State Government and federal authorities to urgently deploy security forces and initiate lasting peace talks.
