Man Who Breached Security During Tinubu’s Kaduna Visit Has Psychiatric History, Say Police

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that the man who disrupted President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to the state on Thursday has a history of mental illness.
The individual, identified as Umar Mohammed from Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna, interrupted proceedings at Murtala Mohammed Square during the commissioning of projects, where President Tinubu was delivering a speech.
In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said Umar had been allowed into the venue as a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Like other attendees, he wore a campaign T-shirt and carried banners featuring images of President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani.
According to the police, Umar became emotionally overwhelmed and broke through the security perimeter in an attempt to get closer to the President. He was quickly apprehended by security personnel.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that Umar Mohammed breached protocol by jumping into the restricted area out of curiosity and excitement,” the statement read. “He acted out of a strong desire to meet with the President and the Governor.”
The police confirmed that Umar has a documented history of psychiatric disorders and described him as an enthusiastic supporter of both leaders.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, urged the public not to politicize the incident. He also addressed a viral video of the moment, stating it had been altered to misrepresent what actually happened.
“The viral video was doctored and misrepresented with the intent to distort the true nature of the incident,” Muhammad said, adding that a full investigation is ongoing.
The disruption took place during President Tinubu’s visit to inaugurate key infrastructure projects initiated by Governor Uba Sani, including a 300-bed specialist hospital and a fleet of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
President Tinubu, momentarily startled by the commotion, regained composure and calmly told security personnel, “Leave him alone,” before continuing his speech. Governor Sani also signaled for calm as the situation was brought under control.
