Liverpool Retires No. 20 Shirt in Honor of Late Forward Diogo Jota

Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 jersey in honor of their late forward, Diogo Jota, following his tragic death in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother, Andre.
The announcement was made on Friday night, marking an emotional and historic moment for the club. Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, made a significant impact at Anfield, winning multiple trophies including the Premier League title.
Jota and his brother were laid to rest last Saturday. After careful consultation with his wife, Rute, and his family, Liverpool decided to retire his shirt number across all levels of the club, including the Women’s team and Academy—a first in the club’s history.
Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, said via the club’s website:
“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention.”
“I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”
With this gesture, Liverpool ensures that Diogo Jota’s legacy as their No. 20 will live on forever.
