The Lagos State Government has denied allegations by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that it demolished a property belonging to his younger brother in Ikeja.

Obi had on Wednesday decried what he described as growing lawlessness under President Bola Tinubu, following the alleged demolition. In a statement on his official X handle, Obi said the act represented a pattern of impunity and disregard for the rule of law, warning that such behavior discourages investment and threatens national stability.

“This is coordinated lawlessness and impunity,” Obi stated. “A country where the rule of law is undermined cannot attract or retain investors.”

In response, the Lagos State Government issued a statement on Thursday signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, denying any involvement in the demolition.

“We categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” the statement read.

Omotoso said the government has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, to initiate a full investigation through LASBCA to determine the facts surrounding the incident.

The statement also quoted Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, who supervises LASBCA, as confirming that the agency was not involved.

“It is disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” Omotoso added.

Reaffirming its commitment to law and order, the government assured residents that it will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violation of existing regulations.

“The Lagos State Government welcomes everyone to live and work in the state and remains committed to ensuring their safety and security,” the statement concluded.
