Lagos Corps Member Emerges Runner-Up in DG’s Writing Contest

A corps member serving in Lagos State, Muhammad Salahudeen Yusuf (LA/25A/19046), has clinched the second position in the maiden edition of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director General’s Creative Contest.
Yusuf, a native of Kano State and graduate of Media and Communication Studies from the Islamic University in Niger Republic, impressed the judges with his entry titled *”The Boot Left Behind.”
The national contest, which closed submissions on June 20, 2025, aimed to encourage creativity among corps members across the country. For his outstanding performance, Yusuf was awarded a cash prize of ₦70,000.
Speaking during a visit to the NYSC Lagos State Secretariat in Surulere, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, for the opportunity. He used the moment to urge fellow corps members to embrace the spirit of service with selflessness.
Quoting themes from his winning story, he called on youths to view the National Service beyond a certificate requirement for employment, but as a platform to make meaningful impact in the lives of others.
Receiving the awardee in her office, the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Christiana Salmwang, commended Yusuf for making the state proud. She encouraged him to continue honing his writing skills, noting that his storytelling talent has clearly set him apart.
“You’ve discovered your niche,” Salmwang said. “Keep writing—especially short stories. It’s a path that can open doors and shape futures.”
