Labour Party Faction Moves to Expel Peter Obi Over Coalition Involvement

A faction within the Labour Party has announced plans to expel Peter Obi for joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
The factional National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this known during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday. He argued that Obi’s participation in the coalition violates the Labour Party’s constitution, insisting it is unlawful to associate with two political parties at once.
“We are convening a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where he will be expelled,” Arabambi said, adding that the decision would later be ratified at the party’s convention.
Arabambi accused Obi of authoritarian tendencies and claimed the former Anambra governor never contributed to building the Labour Party but merely took advantage of the momentum created by the #EndSARS movement and dissatisfaction with previous administrations.
“He fights everyone within the party just to have his way,” Arabambi alleged.
The Labour Party had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Obi’s resignation following his involvement in the newly formed opposition coalition.
Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh also criticized the coalition, describing its members as opportunists merely chasing power.
Obi, however, maintains that he remains a loyal member of the Labour Party. He said his participation in the coalition is aimed at fostering unity among opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 presidential election.
