Keyamo Defends KWAM 1 Airport Ambassador Role As Voluntary

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo (SAN) has defended the appointment of Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an Airport Security Protocol Ambassador despite his recent misconduct at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement on his X account, Keyamo said the move aligns with global practice, where offenders who show remorse are engaged to educate the public against similar offences.
The announcement has sparked criticism, especially following the government’s decision to reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and plans to work with him to promote proper airport security protocol.
Many Nigerians have compared this gesture to the recent detention of Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson over a similar breach, questioning what they see as preferential treatment.
Keyamo clarified that the ambassadorial role does not come with perks or an official position. “It is common practice worldwide to make repentant offenders speak publicly against the conduct they once engaged in. It is voluntary and unpaid, akin to community service,” he explained.
The minister added that the government may also consider Emmanson for a similar role, noting she has been released from prison and has shown remorse. “While aviation agencies are considering KWAM 1, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) are exploring the possibility of using Ms. Emmanson as their Ambassador for good passenger conduct,” he said.
Dismissing claims of bias, Keyamo insisted the government has been fair in its handling of both cases. “While the usual suspects can continue to question our decisions, we believe our actions reflect fairness to all,” he stated.
