Kenneth Okonkwo Accuses Peter Obi Of Betrayal Over Support For Abure-Led Labour Party Faction

Nollywood actor and former Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused Peter Obi of betraying him amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
In a widely circulated interview with Symfoni, which began trending on Saturday, Okonkwo, who resigned from the party in February 2025, said Obi disregarded his warnings and aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction — a decision he described as a deep personal betrayal.
“Any politician that knows what he’s doing cannot be betrayed by another. If there is anybody that betrayed the other, I can say it emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me,” Okonkwo declared.
He claimed Obi was misled by LP executives who falsely told him the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recognized their faction. Despite Okonkwo’s private warnings, Obi allegedly chose to back the group.
“I told him: ‘Sir, you’ve made public statements about integrity. Even if INEC recognizes them, that’s not a justification to go back to them. They are undemocratic and will destroy your political legacy,’” Okonkwo said.
He described members of the Abure-led faction as “agents of the government” and accused them of orchestrating illegal and unconstitutional actions. Okonkwo said he made his stance clear to Obi and other members of his inner circle — warning that if Obi realigned with the group, he would not follow.
“Within 72 hours, Obi visited Abure’s office and publicly endorsed them. One of their leaders even sent me the video to mock me,” he revealed.
According to Okonkwo, Obi only tried to adopt a neutral stance after INEC distanced itself from the Abure faction. “But I told him neutrality was no longer an option. He had already made a choice,” he added.
The interview has sparked renewed attention on the internal divisions within the Labour Party and Obi’s political positioning ahead of future elections.
