UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has criticised Nigeria’s citizenship law, revealing that it denies women the right to transfer nationality to their children.

Speaking on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Badenoch said although she holds Nigerian citizenship through her parents, she cannot legally pass it on to her children because she is a woman.

“I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents. I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman,” she said.

Badenoch, who currently serves as UK Business Secretary, used the example to highlight flaws in global immigration policies. She claimed many Nigerians take advantage of the UK’s relaxed rules to easily obtain British citizenship.

“Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK and stay for a relatively free period of time, acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive,” she stated.

She added that the Conservative government under her leadership has taken steps to tighten immigration, saying, “That is why under my leadership, we now have policies to make it harder to just get British citizenship. It has been too easy.”
