Kano State Government Declares Eid-el-Kabir Holiday for All Schools

The Kano State Government has officially announced a break for all primary and secondary schools across the state in celebration of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festivities. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, schools will proceed on holiday from Wednesday, June 4 to Sunday, June 15, 2025. Academic activities are expected to resume fully on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The announcement, signed by Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment, emphasized that the decision aligns with the approved 2024/2025 academic calendar. Parents and guardians of boarding school students are advised to pick up their children early on June 4, ahead of the break.

Despite the extended holiday, the Ministry confirmed that no other adjustments will be made to the school calendar. All academic activities and other public holidays previously scheduled remain unchanged.

Dr. Ali Makoda, the Kano State Commissioner of Education, expressed appreciation to parents and stakeholders for their continuous support. He also urged all students to adhere strictly to the resumption date and return promptly after the holiday.

“I want to use this opportunity to appreciate the usual support and cooperation given to the Ministry by the good people of the state and wish the students a successful Sallah break,” the statement read.

This move by the government is aimed at allowing students, teachers, and families to fully participate in Eid-el-Kabir (Eid al-Adha) celebrations — one of the most significant Islamic holidays, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God through his willingness to sacrifice his son.

Eid-el-Kabir is marked by prayers, charitable giving, and the symbolic sacrifice of animals, with portions shared among family members, friends, and those in need. The holiday promotes unity, gratitude, and compassion, especially within the Muslim community.

As Kano joins other states and countries in observing the holiday, stakeholders are reminded to uphold the values of education, discipline, and punctuality, ensuring that the festive break does not affect the broader academic schedule.
