Kano Assembly Suspends Rano LGA Chairman Alhaji Naziru Ya’u For Three Months

Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday suspended Alhaji Naziru Ya’u, Chairman of Rano Local Government Council, for three months over alleged misconduct.
The suspension followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Public Petition during plenary presided over by Speaker Alhaji Jibril Falgore.
The report, presented by Committee Chairman and Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini (Dala-NNPP), was based on a petition signed by nine of the council’s ten councillors.
The petition accused Ya’u of financial recklessness, sale of shops, and diversion of fertilizer meant for the local government.
Ya’u admitted increasing the price of fertilizer by N2,000 per bag during the last sales, against the state directive of N20,000, claiming the increment was for “logistics support.”
The committee also found a lack of coordination between the chairman and councillors and reported that Ya’u diverted a feeder road project from Kwanar Juma-Gada to another ward without approval from the state Ministry of Local Government or the council.
Although the chairman denied the allegations, the committee recommended his suspension under Section 128 of the Constitution and Section 55 (1–6) of the Kano State Local Government Law, 2006.
The committee further called for the immediate submission of Rano LGA’s 2025 financial statement and for the Vice Chairman to act as chairman during the suspension.
The House unanimously adopted the recommendations, suspending Ya’u and placing the council under temporary oversight.
