Amid calls from some politicians urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election, former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday visited the Hilltop residence of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), in Minna, Niger State, to celebrate his 84th birthday.

Jonathan led other well-wishers to honour Babangida but avoided comments on being pushed into the 2027 race. The Minna residence of Babangida has long been a political pilgrimage site for presidential aspirants.

Some northern groups have been calling on Jonathan to run, arguing he should complete the South’s eight-year presidential slot if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not re-elected.

During the visit, Jonathan praised Babangida as a statesman committed to Nigeria’s unity.

“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country. That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” Jonathan said.

He noted that Babangida never saw himself as a sectional leader and would continue to be celebrated for his contributions to national cohesion.

“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him long life so that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary footsteps,” Jonathan added.
