Jigawa Gov commissions solar-powered irrigation for food security

Governor Umar Namadi has commissioned the Lallashi Borehole-Based Irrigation Scheme in Maigatari Local Government Area, a key step in achieving food security and modernizing agriculture in Jigawa State.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the project, powered by solar energy and using semi-conduit and drip irrigation techniques, ensures year-round farming and economic opportunities for farmers.
According to him, the 10-hectare scheme, supported by four industrial boreholes, directly benefits 80 smallholder farmers, enhancing crop yields and livelihoods.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing the 12-Point Agenda, emphasizing the expansion of irrigation facilities, including dams and borehole-based systems.
He said that similar projects in Birniwa and Kafin Hausa and Birniwa local government areas will soon be completed, while the 2025 budget includes further irrigation projects in Gumel, Sule Tankarkar, and Gagarawa.
He also highlighted the initiative’s role in reducing dependence on seasonal rainfalls, boosting agricultural productivity, and improving farmers’ incomes.
