Inside Ebonyi: Where Children Are Forced to Learn Under Trees

At Aguebele Primary School in Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, pupils have been taking lessons under a tree for years. Ngbo is just a stone’s throw from Abakaliki, the state capital, yet basic educational infrastructure remains severely lacking. This disturbing reality is not unique to Aguebele; it is estimated that over 400 primary and secondary schools across Ebonyi State face similar conditions.
A simple glance at the blackboard propped up beneath the tree reveals the stark neglect endured by these children. This situation is nothing short of child education abuse — a neglect of the fundamental right to a safe and conducive learning environment. In this day and age, such scenes are unacceptable and should provoke serious concern and immediate action.
As revealed by Nwoba Chika Nwoba on Facebook, “This is how pupils take lessons every day at Aguebele Primary School in Ngbo, Ohaukwu LGA of Ebonyi State for years now. Ngbo is a foot away from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State’s capital. I’m pretty sure that over 400 primary & secondary schools are in this condition in Ebonyi currently. Look at the board in front of them. This is child education abuse. We should have outgrown this by now.”

The Ebonyi State Government must take urgent responsibility. Each day that rain pours, teaching grinds to a halt, robbing students of valuable learning time. While it is understood that all infrastructure challenges cannot be resolved overnight, certain issues, such as providing basic classroom facilities, should be prioritized.
Local government chairmen, as the closest representatives to the people, also have a crucial role. Their accountability and responsiveness are currently in question. The community’s patience is wearing thin as the failures and excesses of local leadership seem to hinder progress rather than promote it.
Education is the foundation for development. Ebonyi State cannot afford to continue neglecting its future by allowing thousands of students to learn under trees. It is a call for immediate intervention and commitment to ensuring that every child receives quality education in a proper environment.
