IGP Orders Review of Amnesty International Report on South-East

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed a thorough institutional review of Amnesty International’s latest report on security operations in South-East Nigeria.
The 128-page report, titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria”, accuses the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies of extrajudicial killings and widespread human rights violations in the region.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP ordered relevant departments and affected field formations to conduct a line-by-line assessment of the allegations. The review, according to the statement, will involve cross-checking Amnesty International’s claims with operational records, field intelligence, and situation reports from police commands and tactical units across the South-East.
While acknowledging the importance of accountability, the police noted that previous Amnesty International reports had sometimes contained factual inaccuracies and generalisations. The IGP assured that the current review would be guided strictly by facts, verifiable evidence, and institutional integrity.
At the end of the process, the Nigeria Police Force will release a detailed, evidence-based response addressing the specific issues raised in the report.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance, the IGP said the Force remains committed to “lawful, accountable, and rights-based policing” while continuing to strengthen internal accountability frameworks, improve human rights training for officers, and pursue reforms in line with international best practices.
He further emphasized the Police Force’s openness to constructive engagement with civil society groups, human rights institutions, international partners, and the National Human Rights Commission.
The IGP called on all stakeholders to approach the issues raised with “objectivity, accuracy, and a balanced understanding of the complex security realities facing the nation.”
